Samhain Circle: Healing the Witch Wound

Samhain Altar 2021

“My darling girl, when are you going to realize that being normal is not necessarily a virtue? It rather denotes a lack of courage!” -Aunt Frances, Practical Magic

*This is an In-Person Circle, in Toronto, ON, Friday, Nov 7th @7pm-10pm. If you are new to the Hearthfire Circles, learn more about them here.

Samhain comes from Gaelic meaning ‘Summer’s End’- so it carries with it the energy of endings, letting go and grief as the warmth and fertility of the Earth Mother wanes and her energy goes back to seed. As the plants’ vital energies flow downward to their roots, we too draw our energies inward, becoming more interested in our roots on this planet and the seeds of our future we wish to dream into the dark potential of this time.

Samhain is often considered The Witches’ New Year, as the seed of next year is planted now. We may not be aware of its full potential yet, but with all death comes the seed of rebirth which will grow in the spring. Like the bulbs we plant in the ground now, a time of incubation and rest is required for this new life.

Traditionally this is considered a time where the veil between our earthly realm and the Otherworld or spirit world is thin, meaning we have easier access to those beyond the veil- our spirit guides, ancestors, soul family and beloved dead at this time of year. It is a great time to honor our heritage, our roots, do our inner healing work, connect with our healed and well ancestors, our soul family or loved ones who have passed.

This is a wonderful time of year to heal ancestral wounds, past lives and transmute inherited beliefs that are holding us back. As we are in the ‘Season of the Witch’, it is a perfect time to heal ‘The Witch Wound’.

What is ‘The Witch Wound’?

A popular term for the intersection of wounds many of us experience in reclaiming our magick and power is named ‘The Witch Wound’. The Witch Wound is a layered, collective wound rooted in our ancestral memory and our DNA from persecution and death related to colonization, the burning times, patriarchy, capitalism and religious extremism. It is a deep, ancestral and collective wound we all may carry to varying degrees, and for many, it is still carrying a traumatic charge.

The Witch Wound can manifest in our current life as several fears, including fears of:

  • Calling yourself a Witch, Pagan, Priestess, or other similar identification publicly
  • Speaking up or speaking our truth
  • Persecution
  • Being different or an outcast
  • Standing in our own power
  • Success or being in the limelight
  • Trusting our intuition
  • Our body and it’s natural functions
  • Being feminine, female or gender non-conforming
  • The wild/nature
  • The unseen and spirit world
  • Pursuing a spiritual or alternative lifestyle or profession

You may wish to read more on this topic in my blog post: Healing the Witch Wound.

In this small and intimate in-person circle, we will get cozy around my hearth to discuss a bit about the persecution of witches through history and how that impacts us now. We will talk about ways of gently reclaiming our power and go on a guided journey to gain awareness and healing.

Then, we will craft some healing cauldron pouches filled with herbs, crystals and other items to nourish our inner Witch & Magical Self!

We will nourish our bodies with tea and snacks and our hearts and spirits with community, art and ritual.
